In Alexandria, Egypt’s second-largest city, at least 10 people were killed and some 300 injured in clashes between demonstrators and security forces, according to a report tweeted from Egypt. Thousands marched along the main avenue next to the Mediterranean. Reuters reported that many marchers chanted, “We will come back again for the sake of our martyrs,” referring to the hundreds of Brotherhood supporters who were killed in Wednesday’s violence in Cairo.
In other reported incidents around the city: Protesters are said to have attacked the consulate of Saudi Arabia after the Saudi King read a televised statement in which he supported the Egyptian military. The Saudi monarchy had close ties to former President Hosni Mubarak and it promised $5 billion in aid to Egypt after President Morsi was ousted last month.
A man from Alexandria posted on a Facebook page supportive of the Muslim Brotherhood that he was inside the Loran High School which he said was under siege by “thugs.” He writes: “They turned off the lights and locked the entrances to the buildings. We are 10 males and 15 females.”
A video uploaded to YouTube and shared on Twitter shows what seems to be a gunbattle in the Alexandria suburb of Smouha.
Some one else tweeted after the video was posted that the gun battle lasted a very short while and several people were detained.
